Like so many of you I thought I knew all about Vegans before I even thought about becoming one. They were the 'weird' people that pretty much lived off air. How wrong was I.
After being a meat eater for 20 years I one day found myself searching netflix for something to watch and I stumbled across Cowspiracy. I had seen a few clips and articles about Cowspiracy on the internet but didn't really know too much about it. As there was nothing else I fancied watching I put it on. Within minutes of watching it, I found myself being drawn in to it all and I started questioning everything I thought I knew on the subject of global warming and animal cruelty. I studied Geography at A level so global warming was something I had written a few essays on. Turns out what I was taught at school was a big old load of pig's poo. Driving my car to the corner shops and not putting plastic bottles in the recycling were not the main reasons our planet is dying.
Cowspiracy as sad as it sounds really changed my view on the world. I felt lied to after watching it. How could I have lived for 21 years and not known any of the damaging effects of the meat and diary industry and what the products do to our bodies. CRAZY. MADNESS. HORSE POO.
Once I had started watching documentaries about Veganism I was hooked. I think I spent that whole Sunday in bed watching documentaries. If you need somewhere to start I would suggest also checking out Seaspiracy, Vegucated and 101 reasons to go vegan (the vegan atheist on Youtube).
At this point I honestly felt like I could no longer eat meat. I no longer saw the point in it. If I didn't need it and it is really this bad then why would I eat it or contributed to the damage it causes. I therefore made the decision to go Vegetarian. I wasn't sure I could make the jump to Vegan straight away as giving up just meat sounded like it would be a huge struggle. Much to my surprise, it really wasn't. I knew why I wasn't eating meat so not eating it didn't really matter.
Being Vegetarian was good, I felt like I was doing the right thing. I took a lot of stick from my family and friends though who just didn't get it, and no matter what I said they still didn't get it.
After a few months and continuing research into Vegetarianism and Veganism all I could find were more reasons to go the whole hog (no pun intended) and go Vegan. So I did and it was the best decision I have made.
I have been Vegan for nearly 5 months and I have not looked back. Veganism is more than just not eating meat and diary products. It is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. A great lifestyle. How can life not be good when you are eating clean healthy cruelty free food and products. You get to be happier, healthier, save the planet and animals lives.
